The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is considered one of the best and most beautiful rainforest eco experiences in Australia and the world. spanning 7.5kms over pristine rainforest, this multi award winning eco tour will take you on an unforgettable journey gliding just metres above World Heritage listed tropical rainforest.
Comprising of comfortable six-person gondola cabins, the Skyrail journey will allow you to explore the wonders of an ancient tropical rainforest, and learn about one of the most botanically fascinating and diverse areas on earth. Operating from the Cairns suburb of Smithfield to Kuranda Village, this 1.5 hour experience will allow you to see, hear, smell and immerse yourself in the tropical rainforest environment..
About the Skyrail Experience
- Skyrail gondola cabins seat 6 People
- A one way journey is 7.5km.
- Gondolas leave the station every 45 seconds
- One-way Skyrail Experience will take approximately 90 minutes to complete
- Return Skyrail experience should take approximately 2 ½ hours, this includes spending time at the two rainforest mid-stations.
- If you don't stop at the stations the journey will take 45 Minutes
- Skyrail operates daily from 9am to 5.15pm with the last departure scheduled for 3.30pm (closed Christmas Day)
- Skyrail's Canopy Cafe and retail shop located at the Smithfield Terminal is open from 8.00am.
- Plan to spend 20-30 minutes at the two Rainforest mid-stations:
- Skyrail Smithfield Terminal is located just 15 minutes' drive from Cairns and 50 minutes from Port Douglas. Self-drive passengers will find Skyrail's location easily accessible with free car parking.
- Skyrail Kuranda Terminal is located a short walk from the famous village of Kuranda.
The Return Skyrail with Hotel Transfers Option
After collecting you from your accommodation, and our driver will check you in and issue you with our Kuranda Boarding Pass which outlines the itinerary and timings and also includes your Skyrail Rainforest Cableway tickets. You will then be transferred to Skyrail’s Smithfield Terminal where you embark on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway at your designated time.
Experience the scenery as you travel over and through the world heritage rainforest. You can disembark at Red Peak and Barron Falls Stations, which offer boardwalks through the rainforest and scenic lookouts.
Plenty of options are available once you arrive in Kuranda. Visit one of the popular attractions and take advantage of your discount vouchers, grab a bargain at the Heritage Markets or just relax over with a cuppa – the choice is yours. Then it’s time to make your way back to Skyrail Kuranda for your allocated departure at 1:30pm, giving you the chance to revisit your favourite part of the Skyrail journey.
At the end of your Skyrail journey in Smithfield, our Hostess will be waiting to co-ordinate the transfer back to your Hotel.
Red Peak Station
Red Peak Station Skyrail’s Rangers provide regular guided boardwalk tours sharing their knowledge on these ancient tropical forests. Take a look at the diverse array of plant species, including the towering 400 year-old Kauri Pine. Skyrail's 175 metre rainforest boardwalk will allow you to take a closer look at the lush rainforest surroundings including the towering 400 year-old Lauri Pine. Rainforest displays, touch tables and interpretive signage complete your visit to Red Peak Station.
Barron Falls Station
Barron Falls is the most visited place in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. At 260 metres (853 feet) tall, the majestic Barron Falls can be enjoyed from three lookouts with easy access walkways leading you there. You can also visit the Rainforest Interpretation Centre, which Skyrail developed in conjunction with CSIRO. The centre houses touch screen computers and interactive audio-visual presentations providing an informative and fun learning experience to enhance your appreciation of the rainforest.
This ‘Village in the Rainforest’ has numerous attractions including a butterfly sanctuary, a colourful bird aviary, koala park, walking tracks and a diverse range of markets (open every day from 9am to 3pm), shops, cafes and restaurants (extra costs).
We recommend allowing yourself two to three hours in Kuranda.
You will glide just metres above the rainforest canopy before descending through the canopy layers and deep into the heart of the forest at Skyrail’s two rainforest mid-stations (Red Peak & Barron Falls) for the ultimate tropical rainforest experience.
The Kuranda Train departs twice daily from Freshwater Station. 8:50am & 9:50am. If you choose the self drive option you will need to drive to Skyrail in Smithfield to meet the shuttle bus that will take you to Freshwater Station.
