Dunk Island, a popular camping destination off the coast of Queensland, Australia, has temporarily suspended all camping activities as of October 2nd 2023. The island, known for its pristine beaches & lush rainforests has been a favorite among campers and nature enthusiasts for years.

The reasons for the suspension have not been detailed, but visitors planning to camp on the island should make alternative arrangements. Dunk Island is part of the Family Islands National Park, and its management often prioritizes the preservation of its unique ecosystems and the safety of its visitors.

While the camping areas are closed, potential visitors should note that the ferry and day tour is still available. 

The closure underscores the importance of sustainable tourism and the delicate balance between allowing visitors to experience natural beauty and ensuring the preservation of these unique environments. The stunning Dunk Island, under new ownership, is adding some sizzle to its shores with the launch of a fantastic pop-up beachside bar. Visitors to the island can now indulge in delicious Mexican-style food served right by the beach. Picture yourself enjoying mouthwatering tacos and refreshing margaritas, all while relaxing on deck chairs under beach umbrellas.

The pop-up food van has quickly become a popular spot for both locals and tourists. With its vibrant atmosphere and menu, this beachside haven is sure to provide a delightful dining experience. Open from Thursday through to Sunday, it's the perfect opportunity to treat yourself to a flavorful feast during your island getaway.

QuickCoast will be operating a Mission Beach & Dunk Island ferry service from Easter 2023.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Mission Beach if you didn’t spend a day at ‘Dunk‘. Covered mostly in national park, the tropical island is a nature lover’s playground with beautiful walking trails and palm-fringed beaches.

QuickCoast’s home port is Mission Beach, operating a fast cat ferry service from the Clump Point Marina Facility to Dunk Island five times per week in peak periods.

A new Dunk Island Transfer is availble from Mission Beach.  Chose between 08:30am - 01:30pm or 10:30am - 3:30pm transfers on the long boat to Dunk Island. Snorkel Equipment available. Departs from the Clump Point boat ramp at Mission Beach. Parking available.

Cairns CBD Accommodation Transfers are available during the 2021 Christmas holidays.

After a series of severe and widespread disturbances over the last decade, the Great Barrier Reef is currently in a recovery window with coral cover rising in all three regions. 

The Australian Institute of Marine Science’s (AIMS) Long-Term Monitoring Program - Annual Summary Report on Coral Reef Condition for 2020/21 shows after a year’s reprieve, with no major pressures from heat stress or cyclones, widespread recovery is underway. 

AIMS CEO Dr Paul Hardisty said AIMS’ 35-year history of monitoring the Reef shows increases in coral cover are expected during periods of low disturbance.  

“Coral reefs can recover from disturbances if given enough time and the Reef has been given a breather over the last year,” he said.  

“Another year like this will continue the Reef’s recovery but the increasing prominence of climate related extreme weather events and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks is causing more severe and frequent pressures, giving the Reef fewer opportunities like this to recover."
