Experience a taste of survival in the bush with our two-day tour. This Two-Day Course is designed to give you the essential skills in bush survival and wilderness travel. This trip normally runs between May and August. Check calendar fro available dates.

Bushcraft Skills you will learn

  • Techniques to shelter from the elements
  • Finding and collecting water even without a creek, and how to purify it
  • Creating fire by friction, flint and steel, and other improvised methods
  • Bush tucker plants and medicines
  • Making natural cordage
  • Campfire cooking
  • Off track navigation with map and compass
  • Navigation using the sun and stars
  • What to do when you are lost
  • Skills for when things go wrong

Inclusions:

  • Shelter building materials and survival tools
  • Food for 2 days included
  • All technical instruction, training and supervision
  • All National Parks entry fees
  • You will also receive a booklet of essential Bush Survival knowledge and tips.

Getting There
High & Wild is a 5-minute walk from Katoomba Train Station.
Free all day parking around the back of the hostel. 

Please note that if you are travelling by train it is a beautiful scenic 2 hour ride from Sydney. The train normally leaves central between 6:13am and 6:25am (please check prior to the day)

Departure Time: 8:00am
Return Time: 5:00pm the following day

Your Instructors:

Our Bush Survival, Bush Tucker and Navigation courses are led by our experienced team of outdoor guides. You get to learn from the skills they have developed to stay alive while walking, climbing, canyoning and skiing in the Australian Bush and Snowy Mountains. Their experience also extends to mountaineering in Alaska, Europe, South and Central America and the Himalayas.

Things To Bring

  • Shelter: Either a tent or a tarp. It’s your choice. 
  • Sleeping Bag: Appropriate for the season. It often gets below zero degrees.
  • Sleeping Mat: Partially Self inflating is ideal. 
  • Clothing: You will need appropriate clothes for 2 days, think layers, ideally no cotton. Thermals are best in the cooler months.
  • Rain Jacket: Bring one regardless of the weather forecast. Not a poncho.
  • Shoes: Suitable for bush walking.
  • Backpack: Minimum of 60 Litres with an internal frame. (hiking Style)
  • Water bottles/Camel-baks: Capacity to carry 2 litres.
  • Mess Kit: Bowl, mug, Knife, spoon and Fork (not disposable) and hand sanitizer
  • Torch: Ideally a head torch with at least one set of extra batteries
  • Personal medications
  • Garbage bags: x 5 for waterproofing and other uses.
  • Other Items: Basic Toiletries Sunscreen/Mosquito repellent. Pen/notepad Knife Compass (optional)
  • Personal 1st Aid Kit (optional)

If you are missing something please ask as we may be able to provide it for you. 

Travelling with children
Children between the ages of 10-16 years will be applicable for child rates. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
